PlayStation Ends New-Release Discs in 2028: What Nigerian Buyers Should Plan For
Sony says physical-disc production for all new games released on PlayStation consoles will end in January 2028. Existing discs do not stop working, but new releases after the change will be distributed digitally rather than receiving newly manufactured disc editions.
That shift matters in Nigeria, where players often reduce costs by buying imported discs, exchanging games, borrowing from friends or reselling completed titles. A digital-only release cannot be lent or resold in the same way, and its long-term access depends more heavily on the PlayStation account and store region used to buy it.
Download size, internet reliability and storage will also become more important. Players should compare account-region payment options, enable strong account security, keep recovery details current and budget for storage expansion and data before large releases arrive.
The announcement is a production deadline, not a shutdown of PlayStation's existing physical library. Used and previously manufactured discs should remain part of the market, subject to console compatibility and individual game requirements.
