Google Play Opens $1 Million Fund to African Game Studios - Nigeria Is Eligible

Nigerian game studios have a short but important funding window. Google Play has launched its first Indie Games Fund dedicated to Sub-Saharan Africa, committing $1 million to help 10 independent studios grow their businesses and reach wider audiences.

Selected studios will receive between $50,000 and $200,000, alongside mentorship and hands-on technical support. Nigeria is within the eligible region, but this is not an idea-stage grant. Applicants must be independent developers based in an eligible country and must already have released a mobile, PC or console game.

For Nigerian teams, the opportunity is bigger than a cash award. Access to technical guidance, product support and Google Play distribution expertise can help a small studio improve performance, discoverability and commercial readiness. The fund is also a signal that African studios with shipped work are becoming more visible to global platform owners.

The deadline is noon UTC on Friday, 31 July 2026, which is 1:00 p.m. in Nigeria. Studios should not leave the application until the final day. Prepare company registration details, proof of a released game, team information, product metrics and a clear plan for how the funding would grow the game on Google Play.

NairaGame's advice is simple: read the official eligibility rules before applying and use only Google's application portal. No third party can guarantee selection. Studios that are not yet eligible should still study the requirements; shipping a credible first game is what turns future funding calls into realistic opportunities.
