Xbox One’s Catastrophic DRM Is The Reason It Can Now Offer Disc-To-Digital
Microsoft’s controversial Xbox One strategy from 2013 has unexpectedly come back to benefit Xbox players. A technology originally created as part of Microsoft’s plans for an always-online, digitally focused Xbox One is now helping power the company’s disc-to-digital program. Kotaku reported on September 17, 2026, following a new investigation by The Verge.
From controversial DRM to digital ownership
Before the Xbox One launched in 2013, Microsoft was exploring a future in which physical games could behave more like digital licenses. The company considered ideas including digital gifting, recycling games and even exchanging physical discs for digital versions.
To support this broader digital strategy, Microsoft began putting unique identifiers on Xbox One discs. The idea was that the console could recognize individual physical copies and connect them with digital ownership.
However, Microsoft's original Xbox One plans became one of the most controversial console launches in recent history. The company initially planned an always-online system with significant restrictions around used games and game sharing. After intense criticism, Microsoft reversed many of those policies before the console launched.
Thirteen years later, the technology has a new purpose
The technology didn't disappear.
Microsoft has now used the ability to identify Xbox discs as part of its new disc-to-digital system. Supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs can be inserted into a compatible console, allowing the owner to claim a digital entitlement for the game.
Once the digital entitlement is claimed, players can launch the supported game digitally without having to keep the disc inserted. Depending on the game, the digital entitlement can also provide access to Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Microsoft says thousands of games are supported, although not every physical game qualifies. Publisher participation and the way individual discs were manufactured can affect compatibility.
Your disc doesn't simply become worthless
An important part of the system is that Microsoft says the physical disc continues to work after its digital entitlement has been claimed. However, the licensing system has an important limitation: there is effectively one revocable digital license associated with a disc. If the physical copy is transferred to another person, the digital entitlement can potentially move to their account when they use the disc.
This means the feature isn't simply giving someone a permanent second copy that can be freely separated from the physical game.
Why some Xbox One discs may not work
The technology also explains why Microsoft cannot guarantee compatibility with every Xbox One disc.
According to reporting cited by The Verge, some early Xbox One discs may have been manufactured before the necessary identification information was included. Microsoft reportedly warned testers that compatibility could depend on when and how a disc was manufactured. Damaged discs can also potentially cause problems with the identification process.
Why this matters now
The timing is particularly interesting because the gaming industry is moving rapidly toward digital distribution.
Xbox's disc-to-digital program gives owners of supported physical games a way to preserve access to those games in a digital ecosystem. Microsoft has also described the program as part of its broader game-preservation efforts.
The irony is that a technology associated with Microsoft's failed 2013 DRM strategy has become useful for solving a problem created by the industry's shift away from physical media.
The Xbox One's original digital future was rejected by consumers. More than a decade later, part of the technology built for that rejected future is helping Xbox players move their physical libraries into the digital era.
