Valve Steam Frame Launches at $1,059 as New Standalone VR Gaming Headset
Valve has officially launched its long-awaited Steam Frame VR headset, bringing a new standalone device to the virtual reality gaming market.
The Steam Frame launched on September 14, 2026, with a starting price of $1,059 for the 256GB model, while the 1TB version costs $1,299. Valve is positioning the headset as both a standalone VR gaming system and a wireless way to play PC games streamed from a computer.
Unlike Valve's older Index headset, the Steam Frame is designed to be used without being permanently connected to a gaming PC. It runs a VR-focused version of SteamOS and uses an ARM-based Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor.
Designed for Wireless PC VR
One of the major features of the Steam Frame is its wireless PC streaming capability.
Valve includes a dedicated wireless adapter designed to create a direct connection between the headset and a PC. This allows demanding PC VR games to be streamed to the headset rather than requiring a cable between the computer and the player's head.
The headset can also run compatible games locally, giving it functionality similar to standalone VR systems such as the Meta Quest family.
Half-Life: Alyx Comes With the Headset
Every Steam Frame includes Half-Life: Alyx, Valve's acclaimed VR game.
More importantly, Valve has confirmed that it is developing a native standalone version of the game for the Steam Frame. The standalone version will allow players to run Alyx without needing a VR-ready PC.
Valve says eye tracking and foveated rendering played an important role in making the demanding game work on the headset's hardware.
A New Direction for VR Gaming
The Steam Frame arrives at an interesting time for the VR industry. Global VR headset shipments reportedly fell 18% year over year during the second quarter of 2026, according to data cited by PC Gamer from Counterpoint Research.
Valve is therefore entering a market where manufacturers are trying to make VR hardware more capable while also making it easier to use.
The Steam Frame's combination of standalone gaming, PC streaming and access to Steam's software ecosystem could make it an important test for where high-end VR gaming goes next.
For now, Valve has confirmed the hardware, pricing and initial availability, while the first purchase invitations began going out on September 18 after the company's reservation process.
The Steam Frame is now one of the biggest new developments in VR gaming heading into the final months of 2026.
