PS5 Gets New AI Upscaling: Check the Game Patch Before Buying New Hardware

Sony has brought a new AI-upscaling option to the standard PS5, with Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei receiving the first supporting patches on 1 October.

Called Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, the technology aims to improve image detail and stability. Sony says it comes from Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD, using a streamlined neural network and an implementation tuned for PS5.

This does not turn a standard PS5 into a PS5 Pro. Sony still describes the Pro’s PSSR as its higher image-quality standard, while QSSR is a separate performance tier for the existing console. It is also not a universal upgrade to every game in your library: developers must add support.

What Nigerian PS5 owners should do

Before spending on replacement hardware, check whether the games you already own have received the relevant update. In the two first supported titles, look for the additional graphics option after installing the patch. Compare the result on your own display rather than judging compressed clips on a phone.

Players with metered connections should check the actual patch size and available storage before downloading. Sony’s announcement does not provide a universal download size or promise a particular frame rate across every supported game.

The company says it will make the library available broadly to PlayStation developers. More compatible games may follow, but the practical buying decision today should be based on confirmed patches—not an assumption that all future releases will use QSSR.
